Police arrest man after pursuit

MONROE - Police chased and arrested a township man who allegedly wielded a knife at the Banyan Plaza in Clearbrook on April 27.

Police were called to the plaza on a report of a white man wearing a red shirt and black shorts with a knife, which police later determined to be a kitchen knife. Family members told arriving officers that the man, identified as Anthony J. Fanelli, 28, had left the scene.

Officers then observed a man matching the description run across Applegarth Road. Police chased Fanelli on foot and ultimately found him hiding underneath boxes in the bed of a pickup truck, accord- ing to township police.

Fanelli allegedly resisted arrest and threatened the officers, who took him into custody. Police said that, while in the backseat of the patrol car, Fanelli attempted to kick out the window and continued to verbally threaten the officers.

He was charged with terroristic threats and resisting arrest, and was transported to the Middlesex County Adult Correction Center, North Brunswick, with bail set at $25,000.

Police later determined that Fanelli had an argument with a family member and grabbed a knife from the kitchen counter, according to the police report.
