Grants fund rec. initiatives for people with disabilities
EAST BRUNSWICK - The township will receive $20,000 to fund its Daisy Recreation Program, and Middlesex County will get $15,000 for its Recreation Theater Initiative under two grant awards announced recently by local legislators.
The RecreationOpportunities for IndividualswithDisabilities grant awards are doled out by the state Department of Community Affairs in an effort to better the quality of life for residents, by increasing the availability of recreational activities, according to an announcement issued by state Sen. Barbara Buono andAssemblymembers Patrick Diegnan and Peter Barnes III, all D-18.
The East Brunswick Daisy Recreation Program provides activities throughout the year for children and adultswith disabilities. Activities range fromsports to arts and crafts to music and dancing.
"TheDaisy programprovides an exciting opportunity for social interaction for disabled residents," Buono said. "In targeting the social, emotional, behavioral and communication skills of children, this program provides an environment that is conducive to fun and learning."
The Middlesex County Recreation Theater Initiative is a pilot program that is designed to bring theater and theater creation to disenfranchised communities seeking recreational arts opportunities in the Middlesex County area.
"The ability to express oneself creatively through theater is an important part of individual growth and development," said Diegnan. "Bringing this opportunity toMiddlesex County provides a creative outlet for participants while fostering a greater sense of community in the audience."
