Armed men hold up bank

EAST BRUNSWICK - Two masked men held up the PNC Bank at Route 18 and Edgeboro Road Tuesday.

Both men carried guns as they entered the bank and announced that they were conducting a heist shortly before 10 a.m. The robbers took an undisclosed amount of money and fled the scene in a vehicle, a spokesman for the FBI's Newark office confirmed.

No shots were fired and no injuries were reported.

The men reportedly drove off in a stolen Volkswagen, which they then abandoned at the Motel 6 on Edgeboro Road, where they switched to another vehicle.

Authorities believe the suspects are the same men who have committed a series of bank robberies in Middlesex County since January. Authorities said the men have typically stolen a car the day before the robbery or the day of the robbery, and then abandoned it after carrying out the heist.

A spokesman for the FBI said Tuesday's bank heist is being investigated and that officials are looking into its relationship to "several similarly conducted bank robberies." The other holdups took place in Edison, Metuchen and Woodbridge.
