Strong field preparing for Sunday's Haskell

The field for the $1 million Haskell Invitational Presented by Vonage (G1) continues to prepare for Sunday's Haskell Invitational at Monmouth Park this week, with a variety of pre-race strategies beginning to emerge prior to the mile-and-an-eighth event

Hard Spun breezed on Friday and Imawildandcrazyguy worked last Thursday, while the other candidates were scheduled to work early this week in preparation for the big race.

A field of six to seven appears to be shaping up for the centerpiece of Monmouth's race meet, which this year promises to be an exciting preview of the Breeders' Cup Classic to be run at Monmouth on Oct. 27.

The prospective field for the 40th running of the Haskell includes:

Any Given Saturday - The Todd Pletcher-trained winner of the Dwyer, who arrived at Monmouth on Tuesday, galloped a mile and a quarter over the main track Wednesday morning, and then schooled in the paddock.

Anthony Sciametta Jr., Pletcher's assistant at Monmouth, said the Distorted Humor colt will go through exactly the same routine today and Friday morning.

"Todd will see how it goes the next few days, and then decide what he'll do on Saturday," Sciametta said.

Garrett Gomez, who rode Any Given Saturday to victory in the Dwyer last out, has the mount Sunday.

Cable Boy - The Jump Start colt, unbeaten in three lifetime starts at Monmouth, had his final Haskell breeze over the fast main track Wednesday morning, getting a half-mile in :48 flat with jockey Jose Velez Jr. in the irons.

"He couldn't have gone any better," said trainer Pat McBurney. "He went the first quarter in :24 3/5, and the second quarter in :23 2/5. The last three-eighths he went in :35 flat.

"That was his last work before the Haskell," the trainer said. "It's sweet when it goes like you want it to."

McBurney said Cable Boy, who holds the Monmouth track record for a mile and 70 yards (1:38.78) will walk shedrow today, and then gallop up to the Haskell.

Cable Boy is a perfect 3-for-3, including a win in the Coronado's Quest Stakes here on June 24. McBurney said regular rider Jose Velez Jr. would be aboard for the breeze. Cable Boy is the only Haskell starter stabled at Monmouth.

Curlin - The Preakness winner arrived at Monmouth at 8:30 a.m.Wednesday after a van ride from Saratoga. Scott Blasi, assistant to trainer Steve Asmussen, accompanied Curlin on the trip.

The Smart Strike colt, who is the likely Haskell favorite, had his final breeze for the race on Tuesday at Saratoga, getting a half-mile in :49.51 over the fast training track.

Blasi walked Curlin under the shedrow after they arrived, and said the colt will go to the track this morning.

Robby Albarado, who has ridden Curlin in his six lifetime starts, has the mount again Sunday.

The colt by Smart Strike sports four wins in six starts. His only two losses were a third place finish in the Kentucky Derby and runner-up performance in the Belmont Stakes, just missing by a head to Rags to Riches in a thrilling stretch duel between the two Classic winners.

Hard Spun - The Danzig colt, who got a check in all three Triple Crown events, is slated to arrive at Monmouth on Friday morning with trainer Larry Jones.

Hard Spun had his major Haskell work last Friday at his Delaware Park home base, breezing six furlongs in 1:12.40. Jones said the colt, who was second in the Kentucky Derby, third in the Preakness and fourth in the Belmont Stakes, will gallop on the Monmouth track Saturday morning.

He will be ridden in the Haskell by Mario Pino, his regular jockey before he was replaced by Garrett Gomez in the Belmont.

Imawildandcrazyguy - The gray son of Wild Event, who has been prepping at Calder Race Course with trainer Bill Kaplan, arrived on the Monmouth backstretch at noon after a flight from Florida. Imawildandcrazyguy finished fourth in the Kentucky Derby, a half-length behind Curlin, and then ran sixth in the Belmont Stakes. Last out, he won an allowance event at Calder.

The gelding had his final Haskell work on Tuesday at Calder, breezing six furlongs in 1:13.80. He'll be ridden Sunday by Manoel Cruz, who was aboard in the July 14 Calder win.

Xchanger - The son of Exchange Rate, who is prepping for the Haskell at Fair Hill (Md.) Training Center will not arrive until the weekend, trainer Mark Shuman said.

"Depending on the weather, we'll ship up either Saturday or early, early, early Sunday," Shuman said.

Xchanger, who won the Barbaro Stakes at Delaware on July 15, is unbeaten in two starts at Monmouth. In his first two career outings last summer, he broke his maiden, and then won the Grade 3 Sapling Stakes.

He had his final breeze for the Haskell on Sunday at Fair Hill, getting five furlongs in 1:02 flat. Edgar Prado, who was aboard in the Barbaro, will take the mount Sunday.

Reata's Shadow - A surprise late addition to the Haskell field, the 3-year-old son of Include has won two of his four starts at Monmouth, including his most recent outing on July 19.

Joe Orseno trains the Kentucky-bred colt, who broke his maiden here on May 12.

Reata's Shadow blew out last Sunday for his first outing in a graded stakes, breezing three furlongs in :38 flat.

Joe Bravo, going for his 13th riding title at Monmouth, has the mount Sunday.
