Grateful for support of community, school, firefighters

As adviser to the Spotswood High School Octagon Community Service Club and History Club, I would like to thank the students, teachers and many community members of Spotswood who supported our annual Volleyball Game to Fight MS (multiple sclerosis).

This year's game raised more than $5,600, and in seven years we have raised $50,000 for MS research. I am personally very grateful, as I know these good people were motivated by my fight with MS and were motivated by their concern for me.

I would also like to say a special thank you to my brother Spotswood firefighters, who retired my shield No. 30 in recognition of service to our community. I understand that I am the first Spotswood firefighter to have his number retired. Although health no longer allows me to actively serve in the fire service I love, it is indeed gratifying to know that I am still considered one of the fire-service family.

My years as a firefighter and as a community servant have taught me that Spotswood is fortunate to be served by such a fine group of dedicated volunteers. And at those fires we have the support of a fine first aid squad as well.
