Police warn motorists of increased seat-belt patrols

Police in East Brunswick, Monroe and South River are among the local departments participating in the nationwide "Click It or Ticket" campaign, which runs through June 3.

The program, which began Monday, involves increased enforcement and education of the state's seat-belt law. Participating police departments are conducting a "zero tolerance safety belt enforcement campaign," and motorists who are not buckled will be issued a

ticket.

The increased local patrols are funded by state grants. Monroe Township received $4,000 from the state Division of Highway Traffic Safety to participate in the 2007 program.

The goal of the program is to increase the statewide seat-belt use in New Jersey from 90 percent to 92 percent, according to a press release. In 2006, there were 773 motor vehicle fatalities in New Jersey, and a large portion of those victims were not wearing seat belts.

Between 1975 and 2000, safety belts prevented 135,000 fatalities and 3.8 million injuries nationwide, according to statistics provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
