Through a composer-in-residence grant, Schoener met with the students in January, and he later incorporated the students' original pieces to create a composition for the band to play at its spring concert. Schoener, a teacher of elementary school band for over 20 years in Upper Darby, Pa., was recently named national Teacher of the Year by the Mr. Holland Opus Foundation.
