Teacher plans youth day camp for charity
The Super Activities Camp will benefit the Lance Armstrong Founda-tion (LAF) in its fight against cancer and its mission to inspire and empower people affected by cancer. Richard K. Gluchowski, who teaches basic skills math at Sayreville War Memorial High School, is organizing the camp and will serve as director. Gluchowski's father, John A. Gluchowski Sr., has survived two battles with cancer and is doing well because of the aid of many wonderful doctors and treatments. "The help of many good people and the ability to help my father with effective treatments has given him the ability to enjoy his grandchildren," Richard Gluchowski said. "Cancer research and fundraising for this cause is very important to me and to my entire family," he added. The camp, for children who will be entering fourth grade through ninth grade this fall, will offer "a wonderful, fun-filled experience" of some sport-specific activities. Activities will include red rover, kickball, dodge ball, volleyball, "Simon Says," tag and many other activity-based games. Gluchowski, who is Sayreville's freshman soccer coach and assistant varsity baseball coach, will run the camp with help from many of his friends in the Sayreville school district. Among those expected to help are head football coach George Najjar, head boys' soccer coach Nick Cifelli, head girls' soccer coach Leah Craig, boys' and girls' basketball head coaches Shawn and Tara Currie, head boys' baseball coach Mike Novak and head track coach Brett Scully. "Many of the coaches have committed their time and talents to the Activities Camp," Gluchowski said. "These people are my good friends and we all work together for one common goal, to help the youth of our community grow in athletics and character." Gluchowski is a Sayreville graduate from the class of 1988, and played catcher for the Monmouth University baseball team all four years he attended that school. The camp will take place June 18-22 at Sayreville War Memorial High School. The camp registration fee is $185 per participant, and all information about the camp can be found at www.beactivehavefun.com. Gluchowski hopes to make the camp an annual event. "I am proud to join thousands of other LAF supporters around the world in raising much-needed funds," Gluchowski said. "Together, we are helping people with cancer live life on their own terms." Funds raised through the camp will enable LAF to continue helping people across the nation with the physical, emotional and practical challenges of cancer. Since its inception in 1997, LAF has awarded more than $29 million to cancer survivorship programs and research. LAF's goal is to create a fundamental change in the expectations and experience of living with cancer, and to lead and sustain a survivorship movement to help eliminate suffering due to cancer. More information about LAF can be found at www.livestrong.org.
