Cops: Throngs of youths drinking at house party
Officers arrest two after coming upon scene while on routine patrol

EAST BRUNSWICK - Police broke up a large party attended by dozens of juveniles Saturday night and arrested two teenagers on charges of serving alcohol to minors.

Officers came upon the party while on routine patrol in the area of Marshall Road at 10:20 p.m., first coming across road hazards caused by numerous vehicles parked illegally in the residential neighborhood. Police also observed large groups of congregating youths standing in the roadway.

As the officers approached the Marshall Road home where the party was occurring, people began running in all directions from the house.

One patrolman walked up to the home and found approximately 15 people in the garage with pitchers of beer, hard liquor and a tapped keg.

It was then that police met with John Grimando, 18, whose family owns the house. Police learned that Grimando had thrown the party while his parents were out of town, according to a press release from the East Brunswick Police Department.

Police arrested Grimando and a 16-year-old juvenile whom police did not identify, charging them with serving alcohol to minors.

Officers at the scene observed several youths running from the home and cars driving away as they entered the house, and found nearly 50 people on the first floor, and even more people in the basement, police said.

Additional officers responded to the area, and as police walked through the home, they observed beer strewn about, eight 30-packs of beer on the first floor, and beer cans on the back deck, in the kitchen and the basement.

The officers found a juvenile passed out in the basement, prompting a response from the East Brunswick Rescue Squad. The juvenile's father arrived and took custody of his child, refusing further medical attention, police said.

As police officers were caring for the unconscious juvenile, others ripped out a basement window and exited the home through the small window.

Once police gained control of the scene, they obtained the names of 80 youths in the home. The youths, who ranged in age from 15 to 20 years old, were not charged.

Police conducted sobriety tests for those who were at least 18 years old, and released them at the scene. The juveniles were detained at the home and released to their parents at the scene.

The homeowner was contacted and at the request of police responded back to the home, which is located in the development west of New Brunswick Avenue near Old Stage Road.
