Parking restrictions lifted in E.B.
BY VINCENT TODARO
Staff Writer

EAST BRUNSWICK - Resi-dents of West Amherst Street who lobbied to have a parking restriction lifted from their street will get their wish.

The township is expected to lift the restriction limiting parking to two hours on the road, something that was put in place years ago to discourage commuters from parking there and walking to Route 18 to take a bus.

The residents said they no longer faced the problem of commuters parking on the residential street, and that the two-hour restriction was only affecting their ability to have friends and family park there.

"They wanted those restrictions removed because the commuter problem no longer exists," Township Councilman David Stahl said.

The council last week introduced an ordinance to lift the restriction not only on West Amherst, but also on Parker Street and Modzelewski Avenue. All three streets are located in the neighborhood between Route 18 and Old Bridge Turnpike, south of Tices Lane.

The ordinance states that these roads "are no longer affected by commuter parking, and the enforcement of time-limit parking puts an unnecessary restriction on residents."

Stahl said that in response to the residents' recent suggestions, the police department reviewed the matter and said the restrictions could be removed.

However, the department felt that Taylor Avenue, which is west of Route 18 near Eggers Street, should get the restriction. Residents there have complained they are now the recipients of overflow commuter parking, Stahl said.

The two-hour restriction would now be placed on Taylor to discourage commuters from parking there and walking to Route 18 bus stops.

A public hearing on the ordinance is scheduled for the council's Feb. 26 meeting.
