Trout in the Classroom

From top to bottom: Mariya Karcelova (l) and Alina Filipe, seventh-graders at South River Middle School, participate in Trout in the Classroom, a program designed to connect students to real-life water quality, fish and wildlife issues. The school is one of six in Monmouth and Middlesex counties whose students are raising trout in classrooms as part of the program, sponsored by Freehold Soil Conservation District. In the photo, Filipe uses a test tube to check for nitrate and pH in the fish tank water. South River Middle School seventh-graders Alex Tur (l) and Patrick Purdon clean food and dead fish from the water tank during science class. Gabriella Gallo, 13, and Edimar Silva, 14, draw a picture of a trout.
