Pair charged with having engine of stolen race car
MONROE - Two area men were arrested last week in connection with the theft of a race car from a township residence more than two years ago.
The arrests followed a routine traffic stop made by police Jan. 12 on Perrineville Road. Police stopped a pickup truck being driven by Gerald Hunt, 45, of Freehold Borough, for failure to use a directional signal around 3:50 p.m. During the stop, Detective Louis Winn noticed an automobile engine and transmission in the rear of the truck, and found that it matched the description of an engine stolen along with the rest of a race car on Aug. 8, 2004, in Monroe, according to police.
While the engine is valued at $25,000, the race car as a whole, which had been modified from a 1971 Buick, and a trailer that was also stolen were valued at a total of $75,000. The car was found in Camden later the same day it was stolen, but it was without its engine, transmission and rear.
After the police stop, the race car's actual owner came to police headquarters and positively identified the engine and transmission as his.
Police said Hunt told them he was doing a favor for a friend on Prospect Plains Road by transporting the engine. Police then went to the home of Kentheoti Cross, 37, of Prospect Plains Road, and later arrested him as well.
Both Hunt and Cross were charged with possession of stolen property and held at the Middlesex County Adult Correction Center, North Brunswick, in lieu of $25,000 bail.
