Sports Shorts The East Brunswick/Spotswood Goldenbear Chargers defeated the East Chester Blue Devils in a 49-28 shootout to place 15th in the country. Trailing 6-0, GBC quarterback Dean Vitale (14-for-15 for 277 yards and five touchdowns) hit Tyler Mataya with a 47-yard pass to make it 8-6. Trailing again, Vitale raced 58 yards for the second score, making it 14-12. In the second quarter, Vitale found Mark Kukoda in the end zone for a 22-14 halftime lead. In the second half, Vitale hit Dan McCracken (17 yards), Sean Hudson (7 yards) and Garret Walters (38 yards) with TD strikes, and Ron Santana barreled in from the 5-yard line to complete the game. "It was the most impressive offensive performance I ever witnessed," said head coach Dean Vitale "We had seven different players score." The squad captured its third straight Central Jersey championship and passed for a record 1,078 yards and 18 TDs. With three football teams qualifying for the playoffs and two cheer state champs, including one advancing to the nationals in Florida, "this season was very special," said the commissioner.
The Monroe Township Baseball Association will hold registration for the spring baseball season Jan. 6, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Monroe Township Community Center on Monmouth Road. The divisions for 2007 are: T-ball ages 4 and 5; Farm Rookie (Instructional) ages 6 and 7; Farm AAA (Instructional) age 8; Minor League (competitive) ages 9 and 10; Major 11 Division 46/60 for 11-year-olds; Major 12 Division 50/70 for 12-year-olds; Junior League 60/90 for 13-year-olds; and Senior League for 14-, 15- and 16-year-olds. MTBA will also implement a Babe Ruth League, Bambino Buddy Ball Division in 2007 for township residents ages 5-20 with special needs and disabilities. The Bambino Buddy Ball Division is open to all Monroe Township residents with special-needs, with assistance provided during games by their "buddy" helping them swing the bat, catch a ball, running the bases, etc. To volunteer for this endeavor, whether you have a special needs child in the program or not, please contact Mike Peto at mpeto@monroebaseball.com for more information. More details on Bambino Buddy Ball will be made available at registration. The fees for registration are: $85 first player, $75 each additional player, and a $50 refundable work bond per household. The fee includes a full uniform that players keep when the season is over. The fee for Bambino Buddy Ball will be determined before the Dec. 2 registration. The Blackhawks Lacrosse Club's open registration for grades two through eight will be held at Hammarskjld Middle School on Wednesday, Jan. 17, from 6:30-9 p.m. Registration fee for East Brunswick residents is $150 (nonresidents $160). Equipment sales will be available that night for returning players and new players. In addition, there will be an equipment swap and/or used equipment sales (you are responsible for your own sales). Jacket orders are due by Feb. 1.
For the second year in a row, the U14 East Brunswick Breakers girls soccer team took first place in the Premiere Division of the annual Howell Thanksgiving Day Tournament. The Breakers won four games, lost none and tied one. They outscored their opponents 9-0, not allowing a goal for the entire tournament. The Breakers are Rebecca Acevedo, Jessica Doyle, Lauren Edelman, Vicki Fernandes, Rachael Gala, Ilyssa Kaplan, Ashley Kelly, Natalie Mchale, Shannon Nulty, Gina Policastro, Ali Ragusa, Cassie Riccio, Elise Roughan, Angie Shehaj, Linda Sollecito, Alyssa Steinweis and Hanna Wey. Casey Pelican, Chelsea Fletcher and Emily Nagourney guested for the Breakers at this tournament. The Breakers are coached by Tom Sollecito and Ray Kelly and trained by Brad Caruso
Spotswood Youth Baseball League announces a second spring registration on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Spotswood Municipal Building. All children ages 5-16 as of April 30 are eligible. There will be four divisions: Rookies (ages 5 and 6), Minors (ages 7, 8 and 9), Majors (ages 10, 11 and 12) and Seniors (ages 13-16). All new players must provide a photocopy of their birth certificate. Anyone wishing to manage or coach must provide a copy of their Rutgers Safety Certification Card and complete a background check. The final registration date will be Jan. 27, 2007. Inquiries can be made at the Spotswood hotline at (732) 251-6111.
The Monroe U11 Lady Falcons improved to 7-2 this weekend with a 36-22 win over Millstone. On the defensive end, Kristen Junquet and Colleen Campbell each had a couple of steals, while Meghan McClaren and Jennifer Baum pulled down a number of rebounds. On the offensive side, Monroe received scoring from Kylie Davidson (10 points), Christina Felice (12) and Jackie Racine (14).
The East Brunswick Blasters U14 girls team completed their fall season in mid-New Jersey League and came in first in their flight. The goalkeepers are Sarah Botzenhart and Alli Krinsky. The defense was led by Pooja Adarkar, Shannon Costello, Kirsten Oliva, Ariel Shladovsky, Franni Drachtmann and Brooke Levine. The midfield is Danielle Morgan, Odena Hanna, Marnie Friedman, Lindsey Kirshenbaum, Devin Massih and Alyssa Silver. The potent offense is led by Briana Politi, Samantha Petosa and Vicky Tadros. The Blasters outscored their opponents 26-3. They are coached by Peter Botzenhart, Dave Kirshenbaum, Rich Drachtmann and Andy Politi, and trained by Brad Caruso. |
