Sports Shorts The East Brunswick Golden Bear Chargers Small Pee Wee and the GBC Small Junior Pee Wee cheerleading squads took the two top spots placing first at Qualifiers held at Sovereign Bank Arena in Trenton on Oct. 28. This win allows both teams to move on to compete in the Regional Competition to be held at Sovereign Bank Arena, Trenton, Nov. 18.
The Monroe Falcons Baseball Club finished in third place in the 13U North Division Playoffs after dropping a heartbreaker to North Brunswick on Oct. 29, 13-7, in the cold and 35-mph windy conditions. In the consolation game, the Falcons sought to avenge their loss at the expense of the Liberty Lightning (Union) by a score of 11-1. The Falcons finished third in a division with 16 all-star teams from central and northern New Jersey. Left-hander Mikey Stryker earned the win, hurling three innings of scoreless ball, allowing just one-hit. Stryker improved to 2-2 on the season. Nick Cutrone surrendered just one run in three innings of work, allowing just two hits. Cutrone also helped the cause at the plate going 3-for-4 with a walk, and three RBIs. Bobby Dudik reached base safely four times and had five stolen bases. Tyler Paquette was 2-for-5 with a double and two RBIs. Chris Brooks went 1-for-2 with an RBI, a pair of walks, two stolen bases and two runs scored. Dan Morgans reached base four times (three walks and a HP) and scored each time for four runs. Justin Horowitz laid down two textbook safety-squeeze bunts for two RBIs, walking once and nabbing three stolen bases. Mike Fitzgerald reached base in all four plate appearances with a pair of singles, a fielder's choice, and a walk, with three runs scored and three stolen bases. Aggressive base running helped the Falcons to their overall 5-4 record this fall, along with timely hitting and a great defensive effort all season. The Monroe Purple Falcons are Chris Brooks, Bobby Dudik, Nick Cutrone, Danny Morgans, Tyler Paquette, Mikey Stryker, Christian Rousseau, Justin Horowitz, Josh Colls, Kyle Michaud, Mike Fitzgerald, Chris Holtje, Bailey Paquette and Chris Tagliaferro. The Falcons are managed by Chris Brooks and Al Holtje, with coaches Howie Morgans, Jose Colls, Mike Stryker and Bob Dudik.
The Monroe U11 Lady Falcons played their third Mid-Monmouth League game with a tough 30-18 loss to Holmdel on Friday. The Monroe U11 Lady Falcons record stands at 2-1. The defense was led by Kristen Junquet, Meghan McClaren, Jennifer Baum, Caress Fenton, and Kelsey Ramcharitar. On the offensive side, Monroe received scoring from Kylie Davidson (four points), Stephanie Johler (eight), Christina Felice (four) and Colleen Campbell (two).
Spotswood Youth Baseball League announces its first spring registration on Saturday, Nov. 18, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Spotswood Municipal Building. All children from age 5 through age 16 as of April 30, 2007 are eligible. There will be four divisions: Rookies (age 5 and 6), Minors (age 7, 8 and 9), Majors (age 10, 11 and 12) and Seniors (ages 13-16). All new players are required to provide a copy of their birth certificate. Anyone wishing to manage or coach must provide a copy of their Rutgers Safety Certification Card and complete a background check. There will be a one-time discount for registering on Nov. 18 only. The Monroe U12 Lady Falcons dropped their first Mid-Monmouth League game with a 25-18 loss to Holmdel. Samantha Clark led the scoring with seven points, while Jena Pritzlaff (6), Kylie Davidson (2), Jackie Racine (2) and Stephanie Johler (1) also contributed to the offense. Alexa Carini and Meghan McClaren had two steals apiece while Keriann Manziano, Christina Felice and Fallon Regan each pulled down rebounds. In the Marlboro Tournament, the Monroe girls bounced back with a 34-6 win over Manalapan. Monroe received scoring from six different players: Johler (9), Pritzlaff (8), Manziano (7), Davidson (6), McClaren (2), and Racine (2). Kristen Junquet, Clark and Regan hauled in three rebounds each. The girls are 4-1 in the Mid-Monmouth league and 5-2 overall. |
