Orthopedic program coming to Monroe

Saint Peter's University Hospital, New Brunswick, will host a free educational orthopedic program titled "Innovations in Orthopedic Surgery" from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Oct. 12 at the Monroe Center for Adult Health Care, 300 Overlook Drive, Monroe.

The event will include three, 15-minute educational talks given throughout the day by Saint Peter's orthopedic surgeons. Topics will be "Recent Advances in Hip Replacement Surgery" with Marc Malberg, M.D., at 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.; "Treatments of the Upper Extremity and the Hand" with Louis Levine, M.D., at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.; and "Recent Advances in Knee Replacement Surgery" with Kenneth Klein, M.D., at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.

The doctors will provide a general overview of arthritis and information about new minimally invasive treatments including muscle-sparing total hip replacement and total knee replacement. The event will also feature tours of the Zimmer Mobile Learning Center, a traveling educational facility used to train medical professionals and inform the public about advances in orthopedic care. Anatomical models of hip, knee, shoulder and elbow joints will be available for viewing. Zimmer representatives and Saint Peter's Hospital medical staff will be available to answer questions. The Zimmer Mobile Learning Center will be located in the Center for Adult Health Care parking lot.

Candlelit walking

tours set at cemetery

The East Brunswick Museum will offer candlelit, self-guided walking tours of historic Chestnut Hill Cemetery, Old Bridge Turnpike, near Rues Lane, East Brunswick, from 5-8 p.m. on Oct. 14 and 15.

Living history re-enactors dressed in period costumes will portray historical individuals buried in the cemetery. More than 500 candles in bags will light the cemetery paths.

Cost is $7 for adults, $1 for children under age 12. Proceeds will benefit the East Brunswick Museum.

Cleanup, talk to raise

awareness of Darfur

The Committee on Conscience-New Jersey will sponsor a cleanup of Summerhill Road between Cranbury Road and Ryders Lane, East Brunswick, beginning at 8:30 a.m. on Oct. 7.

Interested individuals, who will meet at the Bagel Cafe, 647 Route 18, East Brunswick, are invited to pick up trash and raise awareness about the genocide in Darfur, Sudan. Participants should wear a T-shirt that makes a statement. The event will begin with a short talk. A DVD will be distributed for home viewing.

meeting, holiday trips

The next general meeting of AARP East Brunswick Chapter No. 4855 will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Oct. 12 at the East Brunswick Public Library, Jean Walling Civic Center.

A guest speaker from the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Foundation will offer a presentation. Members are asked to bring one or two items to be used in the creation of holiday baskets.

The group plans a Dec. 6 excursion to the "USO Canteen Holiday Party" at The Cotillion, Garfield. Participants, who are invited to wear an old military uniform, hat and/or campaign ribbons, will travel back to the 1940s while watching the show and singing along with some familiar holiday hits. Lunch will be served family style. There will be one-hour open bar. Cost is $62 per person. Payment is due by Nov. 1.

The Spotswood High School History Club will present "A Conversation With Gold-Star Mothers" at 2:45 p.m. on Oct. 12 in the media center at the high school, Summerhill Road.

The event will feature mothers whose sons or daughters died defending the United States.

Oct. 5 blood drive

The Spotswood Public Library, 548 Main St., will hold a blood drive from 4-7:30 p.m. on Oct. 5.

Community Pride Day to be Octoberfest theme

The 13th annual Monroe Township Octoberfest will begin at noon on Oct. 22 at the Monroe Township Community Center, 120 Monmouth Road.

The theme of the event will be Community Pride Day. Monroe Township Recreation invites the community to provide its neighbors and friends in the area with special Thanksgiving baskets to make the holiday special for all.

Highlights will include a children's magic show at 1:30 p.m.; music by a DJ; crafters; food vendors; a Goofy Gator obstacle course; a Jungle Bounce and Slide funhouse; dunk-pit basketball; a giant slide; a gladiator joust; Gorrilligan's Island; and more.

Jewish history panel will sponsor lectures

The Jewish Historical Society of Central Jersey, New Brunswick, will offer two upcoming lectures.

Dr. Mildred Goodwin, professor emeritus, New Jersey City University, Jersey City, will present a program titled "The Jewish Experience in Reel Life" at 10 a.m. on Oct. 9 at Congregation Etz Chaim, Monroe Township Jewish Center, 11 Cornell Ave. Goodwin, who has taught classes in English education and media studies at Jersey City University, continues to teach adjunct courses at several colleges and universities, sharing her lifelong interest in all aspects of theater and cinema.

A lecture titled "Net Gain: Finding Family on the World Wide Web" is set for 10 a.m. on Oct. 18 at Anshe Emeth Memorial Temple, New Brunswick. Guest speaker will be Sandra Lanman, assistant director of media relations, Rutgers University Foundation, New Brunswick. Lanman has used the Internet extensively while researching her family's history.

St. George's Church to offer healing mission

Jack and Anna Marie Sheffield will lead a healing mission on Oct. 6 and 7 at St. George's Church, 56 Main St., Helmetta. The Sheffields, who have been in the healing ministry for almost 30 years, are the founders of two healing centers - Christ's Healing Center, San Antonio, Texas, and Bethsaida House, Columbus, Ga.

The Oct. 6 program will begin with registration at 6 p.m. A healing service will follow. The second day of the event, Oct. 7, will be filled with prayer and sharing groups. A catered luncheon will be provided, by reservation only. Registration for the evening healing service will begin at 6:30 p.m. Refreshments will be provided during registration on both days.

Children of Holocaust survivors to speak Oct. 10

Monroe Township Library, 4 Municipal Plaza, will welcome four children of Holocaust survivors presenting "Growing Up as a Child of Holocaust Survivors" Oct. 10 at 6:45 p.m.

The speakers will be Milton Gradfarle, Toby Kansagor, Marion Meyer and Shirley Wachter. The four will share life-shaping experiences. The free event is open to the public and co-sponsored by the Henry Ricklis Holocaust Memorial Committee.

Oct. 15 art auction

Oct. 14 Fire Safety Day

The Milltown Department of Recreation will offer several upcoming events.

Scout recruitment set for Oct. 9

Boy Scout Troop No. 61, East Brunswick, is seeking new members.

Pilots to offer free flights for young people

Individuals ages 8-17 are invited to take to the skies at the EAA (Experimental Aircraft Association) Chapter No. 315 Young Eagles Flight Rally set to begin at 10 a.m. on Oct. 14 at Old Bridge Airport, 182 Pension Road. Rain date is Oct. 15.

Volunteer pilots will be on hand to explain how airplanes work and how to ensure that safety is the primary consideration before each flight.

Interested young people will be able to take an orientation flight at no charge. Following the free flight, participants will receive a certificate making them official Young Eagles Flight members. The youngsters' names will then be entered into the "World's Largest Logbook," which is on permanent display at the EAA Air Adventure Museum, Oshkosh, Wis.

Registration will begin at 10 a.m. and close at 1 p.m. Flights will begin soon after registration opens. Hot dogs and soft drinks will be available at a nominal fee to cover costs, but all flights are free of charge and voluntary on the part of the pilots involved.

A registration form signed by a parent or guardian is required. In the event that a parent or guardian cannot be present at the event, forms will be available in advance.

Only young people ages 8-17 may participate in the program. Parents and other visitors may be accommodated with a flight if time and available pilots permit.

The rally is part of the EAA Aviation Education Foundation's Young Eagles program designed to inform youth about general aviation and recreational flying. The original goal was to provide 1 million young people with an airplane ride by the end of 2003, the 100th anniversary of powered flight and the 50th anniversary of the EAA. The goal was achieved, and the program was so successful that it has been continued.

Volunteer EAA members also conduct Young Eagles flights individually. Interested young people who are unable to attend the Oct. 14 rally may log on to www.eaa.org or call Frank Fine for more information.

4-H Clogging Club

seeking new members

The 4-H Rhythm and Motion Clogging Club will take part in the 4-H Clubs of Middlesex County Open House set for 1-4 p.m. on Oct. 8 at the 4-H Youth Center, Cranbury Road, East Brunswick.

Prospective club members, males and females in third grade-college, are invited to attend. Individuals who are interested in becoming clogging instructors also are welcome.
