John McCutcheon will be the featured performer at the East Brunswick Friends of the Library's 14th annual James Hess Folklore and Storytelling Festival set for 8 p.m. on Nov. 18 and 2 p.m. on Nov. 19 at the library, Jean Walling Civic Center. Tickets are on sale at the library circulation desk. The Nov. 18 evening performance is intended for adults and older teens. Tickets cost $15 and include a dessert buffet after the show. The Nov. 19 matinee is geared to families with children age 7 and up. Tickets cost $3 each, with a maximum charge of $7 per family. Youngsters under the age of 7 will not be admitted. Individual and/or family sponsorships are available at a cost of $60 each, and business sponsorships are offered at $100. Both sponsorships are partially tax-deductible and include preferred seating for two for the adult program, family admission for the matinee, and a listing in the souvenir program. In addition to in-person sales at the circulation desk, tickets and sponsorships may be purchased through the mail. Tickets ordered by mail will be held at the door, unless otherwise requested. A $1 charge will be added for mailed tickets. McCutcheon is a teller of tales and a musician. Widely recognized as a master of the hammer dulcimer, he also plays the banjo, fiddle, guitar, autoharp and jaw harp. Theater group to stage 'Tom Sawyer' musical
The Sayreville Main Street Theatre Company will open its 2006-07 season with a production of "Tom Sawyer: The Musical" at 8 p.m. on Oct. 6, 13, 14, 20 and 21, 2 and 8 p.m. on Oct. 7, and 2 p.m. on Oct. 15 at the theater, 3018 Bordentown Road, Parlin section of Sayreville. Ice-cream social to aid MTHS music students The Monroe Township High School Music Parents Association will hold an I Scream for Ice Cream fundraiser from 6-9 p.m. on Oct. 6 at Brother B's Ice Creamery, Park Plaza, Spotswood-Englishtown Road, Monroe. The music students will travel to Walt Disney World, Orlando, Fla., in March to perform. Proceeds from the fundraiser will help defray the cost of the trip. Halloween Oldies Dance on tap in O.B. A Halloween Oldies Dance is planned for 8 p.m. to midnight on Oct. 28 at Knights of Columbus Council No. 4815, 61 Pine St., Old Bridge. The event will feature dancing to the music of the '50s and '60s. Sandwiches, wine, soda, coffee and dessert will be served. Costumes are optional. Rain date is Oct. 22. The daylong event will feature continuous cultural entertainment, a free craft project for children, free face painting, an ethnic food court, craft vendors, cultural exhibits and more. Phills Brothers will host a Sunshine Magic Circus fundraiser to benefit the Hemophilia Association of New Jersey at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 13 at East Brunswick High School, Cranbury Road. The Elizabeth Circle of Spotswood Reformed Church will sponsor a Barbecued Chicken Dinner from 5-7 p.m. on Oct. 7 at the church, 429 Main St. Takeouts may be picked up after 4:30 p.m. The menu will include chicken, tossed salad, homemade coleslaw and potato salad, bread, beverage and dessert. Tickets cost $8 for adults, $7 for seniors and children ages 5 to 12; youngsters under age 5 will be admitted free of charge. The Jamesburg Fire Department will host a Pumpkin Festival from 1-3 p.m. on Oct. 21 in the "The Pumpkin Patch" at the home of the Jamesburg Fire Department, 82 W. Railroad Ave. The event will feature monetary prizes for the funniest, prettiest, scariest, most originally decorated and best DARE (Drug Abuse Resistance Education)-themed pumpkins. Youngsters are invited to bring their decorated pumpkins and enjoy the afternoon's clowns, balloons, refreshments, cookies and amusements. One pumpkin entry per person will be allowed.
