'Proof' will kick off Rutgers Theater season

The Rutgers Theater Company will open its 2006-07 season with performances of David Auburn's award-winning drama "Proof" at 8 p.m. on Sept. 29 and 30, Oct. 4, 5, 6 and 7, and at 2 p.m. on Oct. 1 at the Philip J. Levin Theater in Mason Gross Performing Arts Center, 85 George St., between Route 18 and Ryders Lane, on the Douglass College campus of Rutgers University, New Brunswick.

The play, winner of the 2001 Tony Award for best play and the 2001 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, tells the story of a daughter trying to live beyond a relationship with her brilliant father.

Tickets cost $25 for the general public, $20 for Rutgers alumni and employees and seniors, $15 for students with valid identification.

Alborada will perform on Sept. 30 and Oct. 1

The Alborada Spanish Dance Theatre will appear in two upcoming productions.

The troupe will present "The Celtic Connection" at 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 30 at Dante Hall Theatre of the Arts, 14 N. Mississippi Ave., Atlantic City.

The production, a depiction of a harvest festival in Spain and Ireland, illustrates similarities between northern Spanish dances and Irish folkloric and step dances.

Guest artists will be the Niall O'Leary Irish Dance Troupe, the Centro Orensano bagpipers and the Coolmagort Irish band.

The premiere of the dance company's "Tablao Flamenco" nightclub-style performance is set for Oct. 4 at Spain Inn, 1707 W. 7th St., Piscataway. Show times are 6:30 and 8:30 p.m.

Principal Alborada artists, including guitarist Carlos Revollar and dancers Gisele Revollar, Lisa Botalico, Ricki Santiago and Eva Lucena, will offer an evening of flamenco dances.

'Celebration of Greek Dance' set for Sept. 30

The Middlesex County Cultural and Heritage Commission and the Folklife Program for New Jersey will present the Hellenic Dancers of New Jersey in "A Celebration of Greek Dance" at 2 p.m. on Sept. 30 at the New Jersey Veterans Home at Menlo Park, 132 Evergreen Road, Edison.

The free performance will include traditional folk dances, some rooted in antiquity, from several Greek regions and the various island groups. Also featured will be authentic regional folk attire and traditional music.

The program is funded in part by the Middlesex County Board of Chosen Freeholders, the Middlesex County Cultural and Heritage Commission and the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State, a partner agency of the National Endowment for the Arts.

Autumn Swing Dance next up at music center

The Imperial Music Center will sponsor an Autumn Swing Dance With Big Band Music from 7:30 to 11 p.m. on Oct. 7 at the music center, 48 Appleby Ave., South River.

Cost is $18 per person in advance, $20 at the door. Light refreshments will be served.

OLL Fall Festival on tap Sept. 29-Oct. 1

The Our Lady of Lourdes Fall Festival is set for 5-10 p.m. on Sept. 29, 2-10 p.m. on Sept. 30, and 1-6 p.m. on Oct. 1 outdoors on the grounds of Our Lady of Lourdes Church and School, Cleveland Avenue, Milltown.

The event, which will take place rain or shine, will feature food, music, games of chance, a super 50/50, craft tables, vendors, a prize auction and more. Residents invited to take part in art show

The Monroe Township Cultural Arts Commission will sponsor its annual Juried Art Show from Oct. 29-Nov. 5 at the Monroe Township Library, 4 Municipal Plaza. Participation in the show is open to Monroe residents.

Submissions of paintings, sculptures, drawings and other visual art forms are welcome. Artists should present their work from 2-7 p.m. on Oct. 25 in the conference room in the library.

Kenneth Kaplowitz, professor of art at The College of New Jersey, Ewing, and a professional artist with more than 35 one-person exhibits in Europe and the United States, will judge the show.

Auxiliary schedules Oct. 21 trip to casino

The Brookview Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary will sponsor an Oct. 21 bus trip to the Showboat Casino, Atlantic City.

The bus will depart at 9 a.m. from the Dunhams Corner Road Firehouse, East Brunswick.

Cost is $25 per person, with a $15 return in cash and a $5 casino food credit.

Happy Days Band to perform in Sayreville

The Sayreville Cultural Arts Council will present the Happy Days String Band (Mummers) in concert beginning at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 5 at the Sayreville Senior Center, 423 Main St.

Milltown Lions Club plans Spaghetti Dinner

The Milltown Lions Club will sponsor a Spaghetti Dinner from 5-8 p.m. on Sept. 29 at the Milltown Senior Citizens Center, Violet Terrace.

Admission is $7 for adults, $6 for seniors, $2 for children. The event will feature a cash bar. Wine, beer and soft drinks will be available.

Proceeds will benefit the visually impaired.

Haunted River Walk to raise funds for school

The Joyce Kilmer School class of 2007 will present a Haunted River Walk fundraiser from 7-9 p.m. on Oct. 20, 21, 27 and 28 at the new Mill Pond path starting at the gazebo near the Milltown Rescue Squad building, Main Street.

Tickets will be sold after school from 3-3:30 p.m., Oct. 10-13, at Kilmer School, West Church Street. Advance-sale tickets cost $7 for adults, $5 for students, $3 for seniors. Add $1 for tickets purchased on the night of the event.

The walk is not recommended for children under age 10 unless accompanied by a parent or guardian. Checks should be made payable to Student Activity Fund.
