In memory

Top, Justin Salvesen, 9, of Monroe, looks at the 2,977 flags placed at Monroe's Memorial Tree Park in tribute to all the victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. The township held a candlelight service at the Prospect Plains Road park Monday evening. Middle, Ray Cohen (r) consoles his wife, Susan, during the service. Susan's twin brother, John Chipura, was a New York City firefighter who responded to the World Trade Center at 8:45 a.m. Sept. 11. He and the other five firefighters on his truck were never heard from again. Bottom, Sherman Lillianthal, whose son, Steven, was killed on 9/11, consoles his wife, Marcia, and daughter Mindi during the memorial service. Steven, who was 38, was a Millburn resident who worked for Cantor Fitzgerald as a bond broker.
