Safe with $1,400 stolen from cafeteria at EBHS

EAST BRUNSWICK — A safe containing approximately $1,400 was stolen from East Brunswick High School during the overnight hours after the building was closed last Thursday.

The theft of the 2,000-pound safe was discovered by a cafeteria worker when she arrived at the school Friday morning. The school kept money from lunch sales in the safe.

The office in which the safe was stored was locked when the worker arrived. However, a door leading from an electrical room to the parking lot was found to be open. Police believe the suspects entered the electrical room from the parking lot and then gained entry to the kitchen area by kicking out a plexiglass window.

It was unclear whether the exterior door to the electrical room had been left unlocked.

“That’s part of what’s being investigated,” East Brunswick Police Lt. William Krause said Tuesday. He noted that there were no signs of forced entry.

Police said the suspects likely used a hand truck from the school to remove the safe from the property.

The theft occurred between 10 p.m. Thursday and 5:30 a.m. Friday.

Police responded Friday morning to investigate and secured the school’s security video tapes.

“Those are being looked at now by the detectives to see if there is anything on there,” Krause said.
