Community Bulletin Board “Chris Deibert: Jazz Piano and Organ Improvisations,” a concert featuring improvisations based on selected hymns, is set for 7 p.m. on Feb. 11 at The Presbyterian Church of Jamesburg, West Church Street and Gatzmer Avenue. The event is part of the 2006 Concert Series at the church. The remaining schedule is as follows: • March 11 — “Nicholas Connolly: Songs for Voice,” featuring the baritone in a variety of vocal works by French, German, Italian and American composers; • April 22 — “Old-Fashioned Hymn Sing,” led by the Presbyterian Church Choir and organist Shea Velloso, and featuring audience participation in old favorites and revival hymns; • May 6 — The Tower Hill Calvin Ringers handbell ensemble, Charles Harris, director, featuring selections from the group’s 2006 touring program; • June 3 — Choir Festival, featuring the combined choirs of the Monmouth Presbytery and local churches. The deadline for filing nominating petitions to run for positions on the East Brunswick Board of Education is 4 p.m. on Feb. 27. The election is scheduled for April 18. In addition to the three expired three-year terms that are on the ballot every year in East Brunswick, one unexpired two-year term is on this year’s ballot. Prospective school board candidates may obtain a School Board Candidate Kit from the office of Bernardo Giuliana, business administrator/board secretary, in the Jon R. Kopko Administration Building, 760 Route 18, East Brunswick. Published by the New Jersey School Boards Association, the School Board Candidate Kit includes information about legal qualifications for school board candidacy, campaign procedures and the role of the school board member. Information about the New Jersey School Ethics Act, important dates in the school election process and briefing sessions for school board candidates also are included in the kit. Organizations sought for Community Day The township of East Brunswick Division of Recreation and Community Services will sponsor the 17th annual East Brunswick Community Day from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on March 5 at Brunswick Square Mall, Route 18, East Brunswick. Community-based, nonprofit volunteer groups are invited to participate in the free event. Exhibitors will display materials, recruit members, distribute literature and demonstrate their talents. Reserved exhibit space is free to the first 58 groups to respond. Mill housing featured in post office exhibit
Castle Garden, a row house for George W. Helme Snuff Mill workers, is the topic of the “Helmetta Traditions” bulletin-board display at the Helmetta post office, Main Street. The exhibit will run through the end of February. Castle Garden, which stood from the late 1800s-1960s on John’s Place at Ditch Bank Road, featured eight units that housed generations of snuff-mill workers. “Helmetta Traditions” deals with local and natural history and local traditions. Winter Carnival to benefit E.B. school
The Bowne-Munro Elementary School PTA will sponsor a Winter Carnival fundraiser from noon to 3 p.m. on Feb. 11 at the school, 120 Main St., East Brunswick. Eric the Magician will offer shows at 1 and 1:30 p.m. Cost for the show is $3 per person. The event also will feature face-painting, raffles, games and prizes. Catering will be by Bright Lights. Pot Roast Dinner on agenda at VFW post

Funds sought to aid library hit by hurricane Kids for Kids, a volunteer group at the Monroe Township Library, is raising money to rebuild the children’s audio-book collection at the Pass Christian Public Library, Pass Christian, Miss. Located on the Gulf Coast, the Pass Christian Library was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina and is currently located in a trailer. During the month of February, patrons are invited to visit the Monroe Library and “Lend a Hand for Happiness” by donating a minimum of 50 cents to the cause. Young people’s theater workshop set in Monroe The Monroe Township Recreation Department and the Mighty Oak Players will sponsor a 10-week Spring 2006 Children’s Theatre Workshop from 9:30 a.m. to noon on Saturdays beginning Feb. 25 at the Monroe Township Community Center, 120 Monmouth Road.
