Mexican-American

comedy set for film fest

The 22nd annual Summer International Film Festival at the East Brunswick Public Library, Jean Walling Civic Center, will continue on July 20 with 1:30 and 8 p.m. screenings of the 2002 Mexican-American comic melodrama "Real Women Have Curves."

Female empowerment and mother-daughter dynamics are the dominant themes in the movie. Ample-figured Ana wants to go to college, but her mother (who constantly warns her that a "big" girl will not be able to find a husband) thinks the girl will do better by working in the family’s Los Angeles dress shop.

The movie won the Audience Award and the Special Jury Prize at the 2002 Sundance Film Festival.

The PG-rated film has a running time of 90 minutes.

Admission is free of charge. Reservations are not required.

The film festival is sponsored by the Friends of the East Brunswick Public Library.

For more information, call Susan Sclar at (732) 390-6775.
