Memorial Day services

Several area towns are sponsoring events to recognize Memorial Day this weekend.

On Sunday, East Brunswick will hold its Memorial Day observance and community gathering at the mu­nicipal complex starting at 1 p.m. A veterans ceremony will involve the Jewish War Veterans Post 311; VFW Post 133; VFW Post 133 Ladies Auxiliary; Amvets Post 34; American Merchant Marine Veterans, Dennis Roland Chapter; Vietnam Veterans of America; and the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary.

Township Councilman Donald E. Klemp will serve as master of cere­monies, while the U.S. Naval Sea Cadets will be the wreath bearers; the Middlesex County Marine Corps League Detachment 197 will conduct firing squad duties; and the East Brunswick High School Community Chorus and township Police Department’s Bagpipe Unit will per­form. Members of Cub Scout Pack 61 will distribute programs and hand-held flags.

As part of a Veterans Alliance program, "If You Love Your Freedom — Thank a Vet," two township youths who responded to a call to bring a guest veteran will march in the vet­erans’ processional and receive recognition.A community gathering will fol­low, with free hot dogs, ice cream and soft drinks until 4 p.m. The East Brunswick High School Jazz Ensemble, directed by John Kish, will provide entertainment at the gazebo.

The veterans’ ceremony is open to the public and will be held rain or shine. The community gathering will be canceled if it rains. For more in­formation, call (732) 390-6797.

The Milltown Fire Department will hold its 48th annual memorial service Monday. Members of the fire department will meet at the Cottage Avenue firehouse and march to the South Main Street firehouse at 10:40 a.m. The event will be held rain or shine. Relatives and friends of de­ceased firefighters and ladies’ auxil­iary members are invited to have flowers placed at the firefighters’ monument starting at 7 a.m.

Monroe will hold its observances on Monday.

At 8:30 a.m., a wreath-laying and Memorial Day service will be held at the Veterans Monument, located at the Triangle Memorial on Spotswood-Englishtown Road and Monmouth Road.

At 9:15 a.m., a wreath-laying and Memorial Day service will also be held at the Veterans Monument lo­cated at the Monroe Township Municipal Complex, off Perrineville Road.

South River’s Memorial Day pa­rade will also be held Monday, be­ginning at 1 p.m. at Main Street and Hillside Avenue. The route ends with a service at the borough’s war memo­rial.

Spotswood’s Memorial Day activi­ties begin at 6 a.m. at VFW Post 4589, when participants will meet and at 6:30 a.m. depart for eight local gravesites. Breakfast will then be held at the post at 8:30 a.m. First aid and fire services will be held at 9:30 and 9:45 a.m. respectively. A parade will begin at 2 p.m., starting at Spotswood High School, Summerhill Road.
